Terms of Service
Last updated August 10, 2026
These terms cover your use of MakeCitation, a tool for generating and formatting academic citations and reference lists. By using MakeCitation, you agree to them. Questions go to support@makecitation.org.
Free and Premium tiers
- Free (with an account): unlimited single-source DOI/ISBN/URL lookups, batch normalization up to 5,000 characters per day, no DOCX export.
- Premium ($5/month, billed via Paddle): everything in Free, uncapped, plus DOCX export.
Billing and cancellation
Premium is billed monthly and renews automatically until canceled. Payment is processed entirely by Paddle.com, our Merchant of Record — Paddle handles your payment method, invoicing, and any applicable tax. You can cancel at any time; canceling stops future renewals, but you keep Premium access through the end of the period you've already paid for. We don't offer partial refunds for the remaining days of a canceled period.
Accuracy of citations
Single-source lookups pull metadata directly from Crossref and OpenLibrary and are only as accurate as those databases. Batch normalization and manual entries use AI-assisted extraction to parse unstructured text, which can make mistakes on messy or ambiguous input. You're responsible for checking the final citations against the original source before submitting academic work — MakeCitation is a formatting aid, not a substitute for your own verification.
Acceptable use
Don't abuse the service — no automated scraping or bulk querying outside normal use of the tool, no attempting to bypass rate limits or tier restrictions, and no reselling or redistributing access to MakeCitation as your own product.
Limitation of liability
MakeCitation is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. To the extent permitted by law, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including errors in generated citations. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the three months before the claim arose.
Termination
You can stop using MakeCitation and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for accounts that violate the acceptable use terms above.
Changes to these terms
If we make a material change, we'll update this page and revise the date above. Continuing to use MakeCitation after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Ukraine.
